Qualys offers a real VMDR certified course, but it is a product learning route rather than a general qualification in vulnerability management. As of October 2026, its training center advertises free certified training, and the current course is titled VMDR with TruRisk. Start with that course page before relying on exam details copied from an older QualysGuard guide.
The course covers a vulnerability management workflow
The VMDR agenda follows the work an administrator needs to perform: organize assets, run useful scans, prioritize remediation with TruRisk, produce reports and dashboards, and apply role-based access controls. Qualys says its certified courses combine videos, labs and exams. Watching a video in the library should not be presented as passing a certified course.
For a team already using VMDR, this is a useful scope. An administrator needs to know which assets a report includes before defending its findings. Someone responsible for remediation needs to distinguish a configured scan from evidence that the intended systems were assessed successfully. Those are the questions we would bring to the course exercises.
Free training still requires the right account
Qualys's training center offers self-paced and instructor-led certified training without a course fee. Its onboarding documentation says the training portal uses separate credentials from the Qualys platform. A working production login therefore does not, by itself, establish that your learning account is ready.
Create or recover the learning account through the official training center, then check the VMDR enrollment instructions. Before allocating study time, confirm how the course provides lab access and where the assessment appears. The public VMDR page does not publish a question count, time limit or passing score. Use the terms shown inside your current enrollment instead of treating a forum number as a vendor rule.
Select the missing skill, not every course
Qualys lists a vulnerability management learning path that includes optional foundations before VMDR. Its catalog also has separate courses on scanning strategies, reporting, asset management and the Qualys Query Language. Choose a follow-on course because your work needs its subject. Finishing another product module does not automatically demonstrate broader responsibility for the vulnerability program.
For example, we would send a new scanner administrator through the VMDR workflow before asking them to investigate coverage gaps. An analyst who can already run scans but struggles to explain the remediation queue may get more from reporting exercises. Keep a short record of the decisions you made and the evidence you used, with organizational information removed.
How to describe the result
Use the exact course or credential name shown on the issued record, alongside the completion date. Keep a distinction between a Qualys course assessment, experience administering a production deployment and a wider security certification. They answer different questions about your preparation.
The security operations certifications guide places product learning beside analyst credentials. If the next role involves operating a Qualys deployment, the free vendor route is a sensible first investment. If the next role involves leading vulnerability management across several tools, add evidence of prioritization, exception handling and remediation follow-through rather than expecting the VMDR credential to cover that work.
What to do this month
Open the current VMDR course through Qualys's own training center and check your account before buying an outside preparation package. Compare its agenda with a real task you have permission to perform. After finishing the lab, explain what you would check before trusting the same result in production. That gives the training a purpose beyond adding another line to your profile.
