SANS Portal Access: Course Activation, Materials and Separate Exam Deadlines

SANS course access and a GIAC exam attempt have separate terms and deadlines. As of October 2026, the important portal task is checking the dates on the products you actually bought. An account that still lets you sign in does not establish that a course, lab or exam attempt remains available indefinitely.

OnDemand access can start without a manual launch

SANS's current FAQ says its OnDemand access period starts when the learner selects Start Course, or automatically after 14 days if the course has become available and was not started earlier. It describes the standard access period as four months and elsewhere as 120 days. Use the actual end date in your account rather than calculating a deadline from a general description.

This matters when an employer buys training before the learner has time to begin. Leaving the course untouched does not necessarily preserve the entire access period. If a delayed start is needed, the FAQ directs learners to arrange a prepaid agreement with support before registration.

Before approving the purchase, identify the period when you can study and practise. Check the access confirmation after registration and flag any mismatch immediately. A planned project handover or leave period should be reflected in the training arrangement before the automatic start becomes relevant.

Find the learning environment through the official account

SANS's OnDemand page describes its self-paced format and learning support. Use that format deliberately: arrange regular time for the course and leave room to repeat difficult exercises. The ability to pause a lesson does not remove the overall access limit.

Check the course card and instructions for the resources that belong to your enrollment. If a resource is absent, contact support with the order information rather than opening a second account or assuming that a public course description guarantees access. Keep the email address associated with the registration usable.

We would record course access, lab availability and materials separately when they have different terms. That makes it possible to identify what is missing without treating every problem as a failed login. Share only the information support needs, and never send account passwords as part of the request.

Course materials have their own handling rules

The FAQ describes downloadable digital course materials with a defined availability period. Review the instructions while access is active and keep permitted materials in a place you can retrieve. Do not interpret a download option as permission to distribute the course to colleagues or reuse it in another training product.

For study planning, note which resources you will need after a lesson and which must be accessed through the platform. Test the supported access method before depending on it during travel. If you expect to work offline, use SANS's current instructions rather than assuming every browser resource remains available without a connection.

A useful personal note records the exercise you completed, what you misunderstood and what to revisit. Keep it separate from copyrighted course content and confidential workplace information. That note can guide later practice without becoming an unauthorized copy of the training.

A GIAC attempt is a separate calendar entry

GIAC's retake and extension guidance describes exam-specific processes. Consult the attempt in the certification account for the applicable deadline and any available extension or retake terms. Do not infer that extending a SANS course automatically extends an exam attempt, or the reverse.

If the plan includes both training and testing, work backward from the actual dates. Leave time for assessment preparation and appointment availability after the lessons. Ask the relevant support service about a problem while there is still time to use its published process.

This month, we would check the course activation date, materials access and exam deadline together, then save the confirmations. The aim is a study schedule based on purchased access rather than an assumption that the portal will keep every resource available until you feel ready.
