CompTIA's advice for SecurityX candidates is ten years of hands-on IT work, five of them in security. ISC2 built Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) for people with none. One is a first exam for career changers and students, the other a test for security engineers and architects, so this comparison is about the route between them and which certifications along it do real work.

Nothing in the rules stops a CC holder booking CAS-005
SecurityX has no prerequisite, so the ten years is advice. What enforces it is the exam. Seventeen of its 23 objectives begin "Given a scenario", and the verbs that follow include troubleshoot, integrate and implement: fixing a broken single sign-on setup, placing controls in a hybrid network, choosing a cryptographic technique for a use case. Performance-based items put some of that on screen. And because CompTIA reports only pass or fail, a candidate who falls short learns nothing about how far off they were.
The same topics appear on CC's 2026 outline at a different depth. CC Domain 4 asks you to understand zero trust and the shared responsibility model for cloud. SecurityX objective 2.6 asks you to integrate Zero Trust into a system design, and 2.5 to implement cloud capabilities securely with the shared responsibility model as one input. Both outlines now cover AI. CC folds it into every domain, and SecurityX objective 1.5 names threats such as prompt injection. Governance carries 17.3% of CC and 20% of SecurityX, where it includes threat modeling and compliance regimes. A CC holder reading the SecurityX objectives will recognize most of the headings and few of the tasks.
The rungs in between
CompTIA's recommended knowledge for SecurityX lists Network+, Security+, CySA+, Cloud+ and PenTest+ or equivalent. That doubles as a route, and it suggests where CC fits: at the very start, before any of them.
- Security+ is the usual next exam after CC, and it does more for your later options than CC does. ISC2 accepts Security+ as one of the five years of experience CISSP requires; it doesn't accept CC.
- CySA+ or PenTest+ come once you're working as an analyst or tester. CySA+ also earns a CISSP waiver year.
- SecurityX fits when you're the engineer or architect deciding where controls go, and CompTIA maps it to DoD 8140 work roles such as security architect and security control assessor.
One practical consequence of this order is renewal. CompTIA renews lower certifications automatically when you renew the highest one, so keeping SecurityX current also keeps CySA+, PenTest+, Security+, Network+ and A+ current. CC sits outside that chain. It's an ISC2 credential with its own 45 CPE credits and $50 fee, and CompTIA's list of activities that renew SecurityX includes CISSP and CGRC but not CC.

What each says about you
A CC on a resume says you studied the basics and passed a structured exam. That's worth something to a hiring manager filling an entry-level post, and ISC2 lists CC as approved under the US Defense Department's DoDM 8140.03. A SecurityX says you passed a scenario-heavy exam written for senior engineers. CompTIA doesn't check experience before awarding it, though, so the credential shows what you can do on exam day, and your work history has to show the rest. By the time someone is ready for SecurityX, CC has usually done its job, and the credentials earned since will say more.
Our view
Take CC if you're starting from zero and want a $199 way to find out whether security suits you. Then build the CompTIA rungs as your jobs demand them, and leave SecurityX until your work is designing and fixing security architecture. When that time comes, compare it with CISSP, which requires five years of experience and covers program management that SecurityX treats only in its governance domain. Our one reservation about CC on this route is for readers already in IT: Security+ covers similar ground in more depth and counts toward CISSP, so we'd start there and skip CC.
