CompTIA's continuing education program has several renewal routes, with different fee rules. As of October 2026, paying a CE fee is appropriate for the route that uses uploaded continuing education units, while qualifying exam and CertMaster CE routes can avoid that separate charge. Choose the route first, then check its effect on every certification you want to maintain.
Begin with your current award and expiration date
Open the official certification account and record the award, exam version and cycle end. CompTIA's continuing education FAQ describes a three-year renewal period for the certifications enrolled in its CE program. A study plan for a new exam is a separate decision from maintaining a credential already held.
If you hold several certifications, compare them with the published hierarchy. The FAQ says renewal of a higher-level certification can renew qualifying lower-level awards, while several product lines have different relationships or none. A certification being newer or more expensive does not establish that it renews another award.
For a security practitioner, this is a reason to check the exact combination before buying training. An activity may fully renew one credential, provide partial credit for another or do neither. Keep the issuer's description of that relationship with your plan.
A full-credit activity can still require a fee
CompTIA's renewal-fee page lists $150 across the three-year period for Security+, CySA+, PenTest+ and SecurityX when renewing through uploaded CEUs. It says the fees do not have to be paid annually and must be paid by expiration. Passing the latest exam release, earning a qualifying higher-level CompTIA certification or completing the applicable CertMaster CE route can avoid those CE fees.
An outside certification that earns the required CEUs is not automatically a fee-free route. Check the single-activity and partial-credit lists separately. The renewal-fee page also cautions that a higher-level certification must fully renew the lower one for its fee waiver to apply.
Before paying, compare total costs: the learning or assessment purchase, any CE fee and the time needed to complete the route. Keep receipts and confirmation. A portal balance or purchase alone does not establish that the learning and renewal requirements have been satisfied.
Check the version on external certification lists
CompTIA's Security+ single-activity page and multiple-activity page serve different purposes. One lists awards eligible for full credit; the other lists partial credit. Reading only one can produce a wrong conclusion about whether a certification counts at all.
Use the page for the credential and version you are renewing. When a current exam version and a renewal page appear to differ, ask CompTIA to confirm applicability before relying on the credit. Do not treat a nearby certification name as an approved substitute.
If choosing CertMaster CE, confirm that the course is available for your existing award and that you can meet its completion conditions. A training product with CertMaster in its name is not necessarily the renewal course. Retain the exact product description rather than buying by branding alone.
Make the final check in the certification account
We would complete the selected route with time to resolve account or documentation problems. Compare the posted result with the intended certifications, then record the new expiration dates. Where renewal is supposed to flow to another award, check that record too.
This month's useful action is to select a documented route and budget for its actual terms. Avoid paying for several overlapping activities merely because each advertises CEUs. A smaller plan tied to the exact awards and their renewal rules is easier to complete and easier to verify.
